A regular cleaning, called a prophy, is for patients who do not have any bone loss, pocketing, swollen or bleeding gums or an infection around their teeth. These patients will benefit from a prophy. Usually you will need to see the dentist or dental hygienist every six months.
A periodontal cleaning, called a periodontal maintenance, is for patients who have had a periodontal scaling and root planning (deep cleaning), have bleeding and swollen gums with pocketing and need to be monitored more often. Usually you will need to be seen by the dentist or dental hygienist every three to four months. More frequent appointments are needed, as periodontal disease is a chronic condition and needs to be monitored to avoid re-occurrence.
Many insurance companies will pay for periodontal maintenance appointments only two times per year. Remember, your insurance plan helps pay for the treatment you need but was not designed to pay for everything. It is a mistake to only receive the treatment your insurance pays for. The extra expense is worth it to keep your teeth for a lifetime!
